HOEXTER Gustav 1856-1927
Practice medicine at Rouxville. Initially went on commando with the Boer during the ABO. Later appointed as senior camp doctor in the Aliwal-North Concentration camp. The death rate in the camp decreased dramatically due to the strict sanitary measures he imposed and enforcement of early immunisation against childhood diseases. The Aliwal-North camp was later considered as a model camp. In the process his own health suffered.
The doctor and his family stayed in a 2 roomed house build out of stone on 7 Levy street. The house is still standing.
Stone erected by the Aliwal Museum and unveiled by his grandson, Gustav HOEXTER, previous Appeal Judge.
