Eastern Cape, EAST LONDON, East Bank, Old cemetery, Jewish section
Cemetery information provided by Brian Barrett:- The complete Jewish Section at the Old East Bank Cemetery. Many years ago the Jewish Section within the East Bank had its own Entrance but for security reasons this large Old Iron Gate has now been chained and permanently locked and the Entrance is via the (“Gentile”) Cemetery. The first Jewish Burials took place in about 1904, in the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s (after the War) there was quiet a large Jewish population in East London and not only East London but many of the Jews from Umtata, Aliwal North, King Williams Town and many of the smaller Surrounding Towns sent the Remains of loved ones to be Buried in the Jewish Section here. There are 530 Burial Plots in this Section that is now full, a few of the Graves have no Gravestones and this Cemetery is no longer used.
