John Heavyside at St. George's Church, Grahamstown. "James Boardman was 14 years of age on his arrival. He soon began life for himself as a clerk in the house of Forbes & David, still in Grahamstown. Subsequently he joined the Commissariat Department and served in that capacity in the War of 1835, acting as a volunteer also during the subsequent wars 1847-1853. In 1853 he was with the Colonial troops at the famous "Moirosi's Races" at Dulcie's Nek. Until 1847 he was occupied in trading up and down the country and then settled in Burghersdorp where he was in business for nine years, removing in 1856 to a farm in the Stormberg. Some years later, desiring to be near his sons, who had trekked into New England as the first pioneers, he settled in Lady Grey and on the death of Mrs. Boardman about 14 years ago he came to reside with his eldest son Mr Philip Boardman at Holbrook and afterwards in Barkly East. One sister, two years older than the subject of this notice, still lives in Grahamstwon - Mrs. Crause - and a numerous family of children and grandchildren remain to represent the honored name. Six of his grandsons acted as bearers at his funeral on Wednesday, which was conducted according to the rites of the Church of England in the presence of a large number of inhabitants of the town and vicinity, who assembled to show their esteem for the deceased and their sympathy and respect for the members of his family."
