The Battle of Paardeberg or Perdeberg ("Horse Mountain") was a major battle during the Second Anglo-Boer War. It was fought near Paardeberg Drift on the banks of the Modder River in the Orange Free State near Kimberley.
British casualties were 1,270, the highest for any day in the war. Boer casualties in the fighting were negligible, but some 4,500 surrendered with Genl Cronje.
Two British soldiers were awarded posthumous Victoria Crosses:
Alfred Atkinson, Yorkshire Regiment
Francis Parsons, Essex Regiment
