eGGSA Graves in South Africa - Free State

Information received from Steve Watt and Robin Smith: Full article could be seen at http://samilitaryhistory.org/vol144rs.html The graves of the four Australians are in a small cemetery just outside the village of Van Stadensrus in the Free State. The men were originally buried near the site of the battle, then reinterred in what was the village cemetery in the 1960’s when thousands of graves were consolidated in town and village cemeteries from their original burial sites on farms near the place where they were killed, as was army tradition. The fighting was on Dewetsdal, a farm once owned by Piet de Wet, younger brother of Christiaan. Only Caskey’s had a headstone, the others once upon a time had wooden crosses but these were largely missing. Names of the soldiers: (All died on 27/09/1901) CASKEY L.J. (Lieut) MILNER B.
