Herbert Baker's exceptionally fine St George's Church in Parktown, Johannesburg, contains a moving memorial to Claude Albemarle Bettington. The memorial tablet is mounted the southwest side of the substantial arch formed between the nave and the chancel. Bettington was resident in Parktown, living in a house called Santa Clara (6 Princess Place) built for his father Rowland Albermarle Arthur Bettington, a stockbroker, who raised "Bettington's Horse" in 1895. Claude Albemarle Bettington clearly must have worshipped at St George's church and died tragically in England on 10 September 1912. The text of the memorial tablet reads as follows: TO THE GLORY OF GOD IN MEMORY OF CLAUDE ALBEMARLE BETTINGTON LIEUTENANT ROYAL ARTILLERY AND ROYAL FLYING CORPS KILLED AT WOLVERCOTE NEAR OXFORD ON THE 10TH SEPTEMBER 1912 WHEN FLYING ON DUTY TO THE MILITARY MANOEUVRES "THOU SHALT ANSWER FOR ME, O LORD MY GOD." The finely crafted rectangular cast bronze memorial tablet has a semi-circular top and is elaborated with two pairs of square projecting fixing brackets. Each fixing bracket is elaborated with a geometric flower motif in relief. The memorial inscription is surmounted by a crest of the Royal Flying Corps with their motto Per Ardua ad Astra. (Through Adversity to the Stars). The lower edge of the memorial tablet has a crest of the Royal Artillery with their motto Ubique Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt (Everywhere that Right and Glory Lead).
