LABRAM George Frederick -1900
In Memory Of George Frederick Labram ,born Detroit,Michigan ,USA who designed gun known as "Long Cecil" . From "The Last Post" by Mildred Dooner.
Mr Labram was killed at Kimberley, Feb.
9th, 1900. He was an American and Chief Engineer of
the De Beers Company, and served during the siege,
rendering the most valuable assistance.tools specially made, a 28-pounder rifled gun. This gun
was called " Long Cecil," and was a rifled breech-loader
of 4" 1 in. calibre and 10 ft. in length, with a range of
about 10,000 yards. In order to reply to " Long Cecil,"
the Boers mounted an enormous gun on Kamfersdam,
about four miles from Kimberley. By an extraordinary
chance, Mr. Labram was killed in his bedroom in the
Grand Hotel by a 96 lb. shell from this Boer gun. The
shell entered the window and, exploding, killed him
instantly.
