EAST Isidor - 1908

East, Isidor, d. 24 December 1908
Isidor drowned aged 15 during an early morning swim while on holiday in Stilbaai.
He was the son of the Rev. Joshua & Mrs Sophie East.
The Rev East was born in Jerusalem.
He trained as a shochet (ritual slaughterer) in Holland and graduated with Rabbinic ordination from Jews’ College, London.
His surname was MIZRACHE but upon graduating he anglicised it to East, as that is what Mizrache means.
He married Sophie (nee Yavalowitz) in Cape Town in 1890.
He ministered to the Jewish community at Jansenville from 1891 – 1893,
At Uitenhage from 1893 – 1895,
And at Steytlerville in 1895.
Then he returned to England.
Upon returning to SA he became the first minister to the Jewish community at Klerkdorp in 1903.
Then at Jeppestown (Jo’burg) from 1904 – 1908,
Then at RIVERSDALE from 1908 – 1910,
And at Moorreesburg from 1911 - 1913.
In 1913 he resigned from the ministry.
He died in 1927 and was buried on the Jewish cemetery in Muizenberg, Cape Town.
A lectern in the Muizenberg Synagogue (opened 1924) is inscribed in memory of Isidor East.
