Cemetery information:- Additional information by Peter Silbernagl: John Richard Howard was the First Mate of the US cargo ship 'USS Julia Luckenbach' that collided with the British tanker 'British Resolution' on about 23 September 1943. Howard was the only casualty of this accident, as he was the last man to leave the ship. The captain of the vessel had been ill and Howard took the helm in his stead. The body was found by some local “shepherds” who informed the owners of the property, three businessmen from Cape Town. After much effort with the British and US authorities, the identity of the body was determined. In about 1954 contact was made with the mother of the deceased, a widow then living in Los Angeles. The headstone to the grave was then put up by the three businessmen. The bay where his body was found, is also now called the 'John Richard's Bay'.
